The tower was built around 1200 AD on Saxon foundations. It originally had a spire which was removed in the early half of the 19th century. Some time in the latter part of the same century, the vicar who was a millionaire, offered to repair the church, but the church wardens refused his offer. In 1902-1903 major restoration work was carried out, mainly to the tower, the cost of this work was £800. The architect was Mr William Weir. A new reading desk was presented to the church by Lady Elinor Denison. The Mering chapel was founded by Sir William Mering in the early part of the 16th century. The first recorded rector of the church was Radulphus Brito in 1248.

All that remains of the Lyric Cinema, it was built by the Waltons as a birthday present for their son. This was a genuine purpose built cinema with all the facilities of the larger cinemas in nearby towns. It closed in the 1950's. Later the front and internals were removed, and it was fitted out for use as a youth club.
