Lord Snell 1865 -1944
He left school at the age of twelve to find work.This was achieved by standing for hire in Newark market place in the year 1877. A farmer named Doncaster, hired him as an indoor servant, Snell did not like him and left to work as a farm labourer.He later left and worked as a french-polisher in Nottingham. After several periods of unemployment he was hired as clerk at the head office of the Midland Institute for the Blind in London. In 1894 he joined the Fabian Society and was an early member of the Labour Party. After several failed attempts to represent the party in the House of Commons he was eventually elected to represent Woolwich in London at the 1922 General Election. Snell was granted a title in 1931 and was asked to serve as Under Secretary of State for India. He refused to continue in the post when Ramsey MacDonald formed his National Government. During the years 1935 to 1940 he was leader of the Labour Party in the House of Lords.

Sir Godfrey Hounsfield
Sir Godfrey Hounsfield was born in 1919 and educated locally, going on to the City and Guilds College, London, and the Farady College of Electrical Engineering. During World War ll he served in the R A F. From 1951 he worked for EMI and led the design effort of Britain's first large solid-state computer. Later he also worked on problems of pattern recognition Along with Allan Cormack he received the 1979 Nobel Prize for medicine, for his work on computer techniques to x-ray examination of the human body. He devoloped the first commercially successful machine to use computer axial tomography. C.A.T. The City University, London granted him a doctorate in medicine in 1975. He was knighted in 1981.
